Government Center Garage Redevelopment Put On Indefinite Hold
__________________________________________________________
The BRA continues to hold public meetings of the Impact Advisory Group for this project.

See NEWRA’s Community Calendar, for scheduled meetings.

The IAG is a committee formed by the BRA to review the project and make recommendations regarding impacts, including, in this case, impacts to the North End, Beacon Hill and West End neighborhoods. Mark Paul, NEWRA president, is a member of the IAG. Recently, the IAG sent a letter to the BRA with a consensus opinion raising concerns about the project and the progress of community review.

A copy of the IAG September 2009 letter is here.

Background
The developer, Bulfinch Congress Holdings LLC, proposes to replace the Government Center Parking Garage and potentially adjacent city-owned buildings (including the District A-1 Police Station and Bay Cove Health Center) with approx. 3.8 million square feet of mixed use development divided among five major buildings, of which 2.5 million square feet will be new commercial office space.  The remaining space will be for residential, hotel and retail uses, the MBTA Haymarket Station, and a relocated District A-1 Police Station.  The project site is bordered by New Chardon Street, New Sudbury Street and the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway.

Proposed buildings range in height from approximately 60 feet to 710 feet, the tallest being nearly the height of the Prudential Tower. Approximately 1,500 ancillary and 500 public parking spaces are proposed in above-ground and below-ground garages.  The existing garage, which will be demolished, has 2,310 parking spaces.  The purpose of this phase of both the BRA and state reviews is to determine the scope of project impact reports the developer must prepare for the next phase of review.
