Parks & Open Spaces Committee
The Parks Committee's overall mission is to help ensure the sustainability of the North End/Waterfront as a residential neighborhood by promoting and protecting parks and open spaces that meet the neighborhood's needs and are accessible, well-maintained and safe.
 Park Areas We Coverss Coverage
We are the "eyes and ears" of the North End parks.  The committee's coverage area is in downtown Boston bounded by Surface Road, Blackstone Street, up to 20 Rowes Wharf no further than Keaney Square and North Washington Street, and bound by the water.  The North End has 15.6 acres of protected open spaces, 4.2 acres of unprotected public open spaces for a total of 20.2 acres of parks and open spaces.
This includes the Greenway.

The North End Tree Inventory
North End Parks volunteers are working on a North End-specific update to the 2011 citywide tree inventory.  To get involved, please email us at [email protected].
Some interesting notes:
  • Copps Hill Cemetery is 351 years old
  • Prior to 1885, there was no open space in the North End
  • The first playground in the United States was on Parmenter St. in back of what is the North End Union. It was called the Sand Garden
  • In addition to being one of the most important historic squares in America, North Square was also an important meeting place for Boston's first Italian-American immigrants.
Clean Streets Committee
NEWRA's Clean Streets Committee acts to preserve and enhance the livability and health of our residential neighborhood.  Clean Streets monitors compliance with environmental, health, sanitary, building, noise, animal control and other codes and ordinances related to public health.
Good Neighbor Recognition Award Program
NEWRA’s Clean Streets Committee is recognizing businesses and property owners in our neighborhood who are good neighbors and take pride in the appearance of their business or property by keeping their sidewalk and especially gutters clean and clear of trash. Nominations can come from committee members, residents and the businesses themselves and can be sent to [email protected].  Winners will be determined at the monthly Clean Streets meeting.  More than one business can be a winner and a business can win more than once.  To honor the winners, the committee will award a Good Neighbor Certificate of Recognition.  In addition, The Regional Review and NorthEndWaterfront.com will promote the winner(s) by placing a photo of their business(s) in the paper and on the websites.  This recognition will also encourage both residents and visitors to frequent their establishments.   Our committee will do our part by continuing to educate and encourage residents to keep their sidewalks AND gutters clean and properly put out trash and recycling during the designated hours.   We look forward to a neighborhood of many winners!
